New Alternatives for Denture Wearers

Monday, December 27th, 2010

If you are faced with the loss of some or all of your teeth, today’s technology and advances in dentistry mean that you have several options other than traditional ill-fitting dentures. Your ORA oral surgeon offers permanent prosthetic teeth anchored by dental implants. While some dental implant techniques require more invasive surgery, bone grafting and sometimes a lengthy healing process, other approaches take much less time, heal more quickly, and still provide the advantage of permanently secured dentures, or replace dentures altogether.

Types of Implant Secured Dentures and Implant Bridges

Traditional dental implants consist of a titanium fixture that is anchored in the jawbone. Placing this type of implant requires an oral surgeon to usually make incisions in the gums, possibly build up lost bone, and also involves a healing process that can last several months. The prosthetic teeth either are secured by a set of implants or are permanently attached to these implants, thereby replacing loose-fitting, unstable removable dentures. Unlike traditional dentures, they are streamlined, and either firmly secure dentures in place or replace dentures entirely with a long-span permanent bridge that is not removed.

Another new approach to replacing many lost teeth is the All-on-4 procedure. This procedure can be used in any situation but offers an exciting solution for patients that were previously told that they could not have implants because of insufficient bone mass to support traditional implants. Making use of areas in the jawbone that have more substantial bone mass, the ORA oral surgeon places four implants, two angled and two straight, on which a single long spanning bridge is placed that very same day, replacing all the missing teeth. The All-on-four bridges of this type remain stable in the mouth, reducing the likelihood of discomfort due to rubbing or slipping as seen with traditional dentures.

What Approach is Best for You?

Which procedure will work best for you depends upon how many teeth you need to have replaced, as well as your overall health and the condition of the bone in your lower and upper jaws. A consultation with an experienced ORA oral surgeon will help you determine what approach will provide you with the best, most comfortable and long lasting option.

I do EVERYTHING teeth-related at Ora Studios.

I got an amazing deal on my Invisalign here and I’ve been recommending people to go here ever since.  I go to Dr. Kralj and he’s been great.  He answers all of my questions and addresses all of my concerns. Probably the best dentist/ortho I’ve ever had in my life.

I got my wisdom teeth pulled here.  Dr. Koos did a great job and even called me a few days later just to check up on me.  Excellent patient care!!

I get my cleanings done here.  It is always an enjoyable experience because my hygienist always does a great job and I get to watch TV while she works on me.

I plan to do Zoom Whitening here in the future, so I will update my review when the time comes.

This place WOULD get five stars, but I have to deduct a star because the receptionists are unfriendly, not helpful, and kinda rude.  Remember people, it’s not about what you say it’s HOW you say it.

State of the Art “green” facility with a knowledgeable professional staff, all that and a big heart too.

I can’t say enough about ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio. This place has made a huge difference in the lives of individuals with Autism. Dr. Koos and Dr Kralj have dedicated an extreme amount of time and care in providing services to people with Autism who are far too often seen as “too difficult” to be seen by other potential physicians.

I work as an administrator for an agency that provides services to individuals with Autism.  It is very challenging for the people and families, I have the privilege to work with, to find appropriate dental care due to the challenges they face in the areas of communication and sensory processing. The staff at ORA has begun to provide dental care for these individuals as a way of “giving back” to the community. They have provided care for many of the people I work with, several of whom have not been able to receive treatment for years.

The amount of respect and care the staff of ORA provide for them is amazing. This team of professionals, work closely with the families and the staff of our agency to support “our guys” and provide the much needed oral care that have been inaccessible to many of them in the past.

I would recommend ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio to everyone not only because of their knowledge and professionalism, but also because they are working to make a difference in health and well being of people living with Autism who have had limited access to appropriate oral care for a large part of their lives.

On a personal level I recently switched to using their services for my own oral care needs after over 10 years with the same dentist.
Dr. Kralj and Dr. Koos’ individualized attention and state of the art facilities couple with their compassion for the needs of others with autism in the community, concretize them and their incredible staff as the place to receive dental care

Dental Implants: Am I too young?

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

implant dentist ChicagoIf you have lost one or more of your teeth, dental implants could be suitable for you. A dental implant is a bio-compatible, titanium, root-shaped fixture that is carefully placed in the jawbone and replaces a missing tooth root.  Dental implants integrate with the bone and can be used to support a crown that replaces one or more missing teeth. Implants can also support a fixed bridge or even a denture and are designed for a lifetime of use.

People often feel they’re too old or young to get dental implants. In fact, age is not a crucial factor at all in deciding if implants will be successful in your case. As long as your general health is fair, your facial skeleton has matured fully, and factors relating to jawbone condition are favorable, then a dental implant can be placed. While most people over seventy and eighty years of age are still great candidates for implants, teenagers can many times be advised to wait until the jawbone growth is complete.

Your Chicago implant dentist will evaluate every patient individually.  As growth occurs in spurts during the teenage years, the jawbones tend to grow both in size and height. This growth is often more pronounced in boys as compared to girls. While our natural teeth do not grow once they erupt, they are supported by a connective tissue ligament, which helps them to erupt as the jaw grows, making sure that teeth stay in contact. Dental implants are directly integrated with bone, and don’t have any ligament support, so they cannot change position once placed. The result – an implant that’s placed in an immature, growing jaw will stay in its original position and never move. This could later make the implant supported tooth look shorter as compared to adjacent natural teeth that have shifted with growth.

This doesn’t mean that young adults cannot get implants. Replacement of a missing tooth by having a dentist cut down neighbouring teeth for bridges is harmful so all missing teeth should be replaced by dental implants. Bone growth in adolescents occurs at different paces in different individuals. Your implant dentist will analyze your bone growth and decide the time for implant surgery. Once a tooth is lost, adjacent teeth tend to drift, and the surrounding bone shrinks, making a replacement difficult later. Even if it’s decided to defer implants, a suitable temporary restoration is needed until dental implants can be placed.

Dr Koos is a Tooth Fairy (seriously) he has the surgical skills of an ANGEL.  Needed to get my wisdom teeth out now for the past 20 years and I have been putting it off ever since I witnessed my sister puking her guts out when she had it done.  My back wisdom was coming out and really annoying so I went in on a referral and met with Dr. Koos. With the insurance to extract all four wisdom teeth it was under $400.
5 stars for the surgical procedure. Dr Koos has the most gentle bedside manner and the staff get you very relaxed and set up in the surgical suite. No pain meds necessary after the 1st 24 hours, and no swelling, brusing or nerve damage!  Dr. Koos called me later that evening to check on me and left his information if I needed him.  Couldn’t talk as my mouth was full of gauze  but I’m glad I got his number.  As I am a neurotic healthcare worker, I was convinced that I popped my sutures and they scheduled me to come in that afternoon to check the surgical site and flush it out.

–Chicago, IL – Dr. Steven A. Koos D.D.S., M.D., a Chicago Oral Surgeon, joins a distinguished panel of speakers from around the globe, as an approved and certified Nobel Biocare® clinician lecturer who can offer continuing education credits to general dentists for his expertise with dental implants, bone grafting and the All-on-4 “Teeth in a day” technique.

Dr. Koos is one of a select few dual-degree oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the nation who has obtained both dental and medical degrees. His extensive education, training, and experience makes him an expert in all phases of oral and maxillofacial surgery, however, his primary practice focus is dental implants, bone augmentation (grafting), wisdom teeth extraction, and sedation and general anesthesia. Dr. Koos, the founder of the nation’s first and only ‘green’ oral surgery facility – ORA Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Studio in Chicago, has been placing dental implants for over a decade now and sub-specializes in implantology. He is a member of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and the Computer Aided Implantology Academy. “I am proud to be recognized amongst the leaders in the dental implant field and to be affiliated with the world’s largest dental implant company – Nobel Biocare.”

“Everyday I see the difference of how dental implants can improve a patient’s life, restore their smile and confidence, and give people normal dental function again to enjoy food” Dr. Steven Koos ascertains. Dental implants offer patients a better solution to replacing teeth than traditional destructive dental bridgework. Chicago oral surgery practice, ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio® is proud to announce that the practice was recently named as a recipient of the Green Health Care Program Gold Star Award, the highest available rating to recognize sustainability in the practice of health care.

Chicago Oral Surgery Office Wins Green AwardOnline PR News – 18-November-2010 –Chicago, IL – Chicago oral surgery practice, ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio® is proud to announce that the practice was recently named as a recipient of the Green Health Care Program Gold Star Award, the highest available rating to recognize sustainability in the practice of health care. ORA received the award due to its commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly dentistry®, including such practices as energy and water conservation, pollution prevention, solid waste reduction, recycling and sustainable medical technology and practices.

In addition to receiving the award, the oral surgery practice in Chicago can claim another impressive achievement in the realm of green dentistry. ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio is the first dental practice throughout the United States to generate zero bio-hazardous waste. This is an unprecedented achievement that has been made possible due to state-of-the-art technology and unique practices employed by ORA. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that every resident of North America contributes six pounds of bio-hazardous waste annually for an unbelievable total of 1,108,000 million tons per year for all residents combined. For the Chicago oral surgery practice to eliminate bio-hazardous waste is an astonishing feat and one that its founder hopes will become the norm for private practice doctors throughout North America.

“We are committed to practicing eco-friendly dentistry through the combined use of eco-friendly technology, equipment and services, and even through the eco-friendly design and furnishing of our facilities” explains Dr. Steven A. Koos, D.D.S., M.D., a leading oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Chicago and owner of ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio. “The field of dentistry has traditionally lagged behind other segments of the professional landscape when it comes to focusing on sustainability. ORA is committed to leading the way in eco-consciousness by demonstrating the importance and effectiveness of eco-friendly dentistry, as well as promoting the feasibility of accomplishing a reduction in the amount of bio-hazardous waste contributed by most dental and surgical offices.”

Dr. Koos is dedicated to the practice of sustainable medicine and dentistry and is a member of a number of organizations focused on the practice of environmentally responsible health care, including the Eco Dentistry Association, Health Care Without Harm, Practice Greenhealth, the Teleosis Institute, and the Mercury-Free Health Care Campaign, an initiative that is organized by the World Health Organization. Reducing the negative impact to the environment is a top priority of Dr. Koos and the rest of the team at ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio. As he explains, “ORA is proud to be a recipient of the Gold Star Award and will continue to maintain its commitment to the practice of eco-friendly dentistry and to constantly strive towards improving environmentalism within oral surgery and dentistry.”

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Dr. Steven A. Koos, D.D.S., M.D., a leading oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Chicago, Illinois, is pleased to announce the opening of the city’s first ‘green’ oral surgery practice.

LEED CErtified Oral Surgery Office ChicagoOnline PR News – 29-October-2010 –Chicago, IL – Dr. Steven A. Koos, D.D.S., M.D., a leading oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Chicago, Illinois, is pleased to announce the opening of the city’s first ‘green’ oral surgery practice. ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio®, the practice run by Dr. Koos, offers the benefits of eco-friendly design, technology and services in a luxurious patient-centered environment focused on overall wellness and comfort.

The Chicago oral surgery practice is located in the South Loop, in a rehabbed building designed according to standards and guidelines defined by two leading organizations in the green movement, the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) with their Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program and the Green Guide for Healthcare (GGHC). From the interior design finishes chosen for the new Chicago South Loop oral surgery practice to the state-of-the-art equipment and medical systems selected to operate the practice, ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio has been designed to reduce the impact on the environment, while offering patients the ultimate in quality oral surgery care.

“ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio offers a cutting-edge approach to the practice of medicine and dentistry,” explains Dr. Koos. “We are focused on creating a healthy and comfortable environment to benefit our patients, while also providing a workplace that is productive and better for our own health. To that end, we have designed the facility with sustainable and eco-friendly materials, we utilize technology and practices that emit less radiation and potential toxins, we are powered entirely from renewable wind energy, and we have reduced our reliance on paper by computerizing all patient charts. Those are only a few of the ways we incorporate eco-consciousness into our surgical practice. Of course, quality dental and surgical care is our primary goal, but in the process, we believe it is important to create a modern and comfortable environment that is healthier for our patients and our team, and that diminishes our carbon footprint.”

ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio is Chicago’s first eco-friendly oral surgery practice and is leading the way in offering the perfect combination of premier medical and dental expertise, a patient-centered atmosphere and a commitment to limiting the practice’s impact on the environment. Dr. Koos is a member of an advocacy group of health professionals known as the Teleosis Institute, promoting the practice of sustainable medicine and sits on the advisory board of the Eco-Dentistry Association (EDA). He has also partnered with a number of eco-friendly organizations, including Health Care Without Harm, Practice GreenHealth, and the Mercury-Free Health Care Campaign (organized by the World Health Organization). ORA is an Energy Star partner with the EPA and is a member of the United States Green Building Council as well.

“The medical industry has had an eye towards eco-consciousness for a number of years, but the dental industry has lagged behind in ‘green’ pursuits,” says Dr. Koos. “As a health care professional that spans both the medical and dental communities, I am hoping to promote the importance of eco-friendly design and practices in Chicago dentistry and throughout the Midwest.”

I had a wonderful experience with ORA and with Dr. Kralj & Dr. Koos. Dr. Kralj was my dentist out of Joliet before he moved out to Chicago to open ORA. He has a great rapport with patients and is very gentle. He is the only dentist I will go to and I travel from Plainfield to get to him! I went to him in August and he recommended I have my wisdom teeth removed. I met with Dr. Koos and oral surgeon for a consultation the day of the extraction and he answered all my questions and put me at ease. Dr Koos also has a similar demeanor with patients and is great!  The procedure itself was quick and pretty easy, no complications at all. I had all 4 wisdom teeth out last Friday and am eating and chewing normally with no pain at all! They are a great, great practice and I highly recommend them!
