Fractured Tooth: What are my options?

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

Chicago tooth extractionWhen a tooth is fractured or broken, your treatment options will be heavily dependent upon the extent of the fracture. In most cases, if there is a reasonable chance of saving the tooth, a strong dental restoration should be recommended.

If the fracture extends below the gumline, or involves the roots of the tooth, you will need to consult an oral and maxillofacial oral surgeon about tooth extraction and tooth replacement plans. Even with extensive restorative treatment, the prognosis for a fractured tooth is often poor. You should rely not only upon your dentist’s recommendation, but also the expertise of a dental trauma expert – an oral and maxillofacial surgeon – in determining the fate of your tooth.

Rather than invest your precious time and finances into a tooth with an unfavorable prognosis, tooth extraction followed by the placement of a dental implant could prove to be the most feasible, rational, and longest lasting choice. An oral surgeon is the best dental professional most equipped to manage the challenges of atraumatically extracting a damaged tooth. Once the tooth has been gently removed, your oral surgeon also has the ability to place a dental implant, often immediately.

The success of your dental implant is largely influenced by the volume and density of the underlying bone. A fractured tooth must be removed as carefully as possible in order to preserve the integrity of the surrounding bone. Sometimes, the surrounding bone becomes damaged as a result of the traumatized tooth, in which case additional procedures such as bone grafting or recontouring may be necessary. In the hands of a skilled dental surgery professional, these related procedures can be completed with relative ease by your Chicago oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

A fractured tooth is an unpredictable dental condition. Whenever it is possible, reasonable and conservative efforts should be made to save and restore your natural teeth.  However, this is usually not possible. In the absence of your natural tooth, a dental implant provides you with the best and most naturally appearing and functioning tooth replacement alternative.  Without compromising the integrity of the adjacent teeth, the implant completely mimics a real tooth both in form and in function.

Can I Replace Both Lower and Upper Teeth With All-on-4 Dental Implants?

Friday, June 15th, 2012

All-on-Four ChicagoIf you are completely edentulous, or missing all of your upper and lower teeth, there is a tooth replacement solution that has been designed expressly for you. By harnessing the advantages of both dental implants and dentures, your oral surgeon can permanently restore your entire smile, and more often than not, in a single day!

Utilizing a revolutionary concept known as All-On-4, Drs. Steven Koos and Brian Shah, your downtown Chicago oral and maxillofacial surgeons, have the ability to establish a firm foundation upon which your new smile can be anchored. Patients who are less than satisfied with their traditional dentures, as well as those patients who may lack the bone volume to support a full complement of dental implants, can be ideal candidates for the All-On-4 procedure.

With a proven surgical strategy, your full upper or full lower denture can be replaced with a set of four dental implants and a custom fabricated, full arch dental bridge, to create a strong, healthy smile. Rather than relying on your gum tissue for support like dentures do, the implants are able to securely and comfortably absorb the forces of biting and chewing.

Patients who are healthy enough to tolerate surgical treatment may elect to have both the upper and lower teeth replaced in the same visit. For most patients, this procedure is revolutionary, to have what used to take over a year of multiple visits and multiple procedures carried out in one day under the comforts of sedation anesthesia. In fact, many patients are surprised that they are also able to resume eating a soft diet and speaking on the same day that the procedure is performed.

A complete review of your medical history will be necessary, as well as complete advanced 3D x-rays and a clinical evaluation in order to determine if this procedure is right for you. Our dental clinic team at ORA® Oral Surgery & Implant Studio will provide a thorough explanation of the procedure and review the post-operative instructions once you and your oral surgeon have decided to move forward with your treatment.

Your teeth are a necessary part of your everyday life. Without teeth that feel stable and strong, each day can become quite a challenge. To regain your confidence and restore your dental health, schedule a discussion with our dental implant experts to learn more about the All-On-4 procedure today.

Online PR News – 11-June-2012 –Chicago, IL – Dr. Steven Koos, a Chicago Loop oral surgeon and owner of ORA® Oral Surgery & Implant Studio, is pleased to announce the introduction of an exciting new promotion being offered during the summer of 2012. The Chicago oral surgeon is offering a free Apple 16GB iPad® (with WiFi) to any patient undergoing a wisdom tooth removal procedure in Chicago at ORA® Oral Surgery & Implant Studio, as long as the patient meets the basic eligibility criteria.

ORA® is proud to offer the new Apple iPad® to patients having their      wisdom teeth extracted. The offer is revolutionary and the new iPad is “resolutionary”. This is the first promotion of its kind for those considering removal of their wisdom teeth in Chicago. There is no fine print to this promotion and the details are simple. The offer is good throughout the entire summer. Patients do not have to have the procedure completed by the end of the promotion, but rather must simply schedule an appointment for the procedure by the end of the promotion period. Once the wisdom tooth extraction procedure is complete, eligible patients will have the opportunity to specify a color preference (white or black) for their new iPad®. Then, all that’s left to do is to wait for ORA to receive delivery (which may take up to four weeks) and patients can pick up their new iPad® from ORA®‘s South Loop oral surgery office in downtown Chicago.

“We are proud to offer such an enticing promotion to our patients,” explains Chicago oral surgeon, Dr. Steven Koos. “We understand that many patients get busy over the summer months and tend to put aside their dental health, or other procedures or appointments that they would rather not deal with until a later time. But our new promotion now offers residents of Chicago needing wisdom teeth removal a win-win scenario. They no longer have an excuse to put off a procedure that needs to get done and by addressing their dental health needs sooner rather than later, they are rewarded with a brand new Apple iPad®. Dental Implants: What will happen without treatment?

Monday, June 4th, 2012

implant dentist ChicagoWhen contemplating your options for dental treatment, it is important to understand the advantages of your dentist’s recommendations, but it is equally important to understand what will happen if you choose to do nothing. In order to properly weigh the risks versus the benefits, you deserve to have all of the facts.

Tooth loss is a dental condition that millions of patients are faced with each year. Some of these patients may seek the best available treatment, and others may choose to postpone treatment indefinitely. Of course, our implant dentist serving Chicago Illinois will recommend the very best treatment option, with your long-term oral health and oral stability in mind.  Today, that option is typically dental implants.

Implants are so similar to natural teeth, that they can prevent virtually all of the problems associated with tooth loss. They are the only form of tooth replacement that can extend below the gumline to replace the missing tooth root. Above the gums, the implant will mimic the shape, size, and shade of the natural teeth.

Without treatment, bone resorption can be expected to occur at the location of the missing tooth, eventually spreading to affect the neighboring teeth. Research has proven that bone loss or bone resorption will occur without the direct stimulation of a natural or artificial tooth root.

Unfortunately, bone loss is responsible for a chain reaction of events that can disrupt the quality of your life and compromise your health. Bone loss tends to lead to pockets and irregularities beneath the gumline that can promote periodontal disease (gum disease). A decrease in bone volume also has a significant impact on the appearance of your facial features, such as sunken lips, cheeks, and jaws.

The decision to forgo tooth replacement will also compromise the position of the neighboring teeth. As the teeth shift or move due to a lack of support, a number of complications may arise. Difficulty brushing or flossing with consequential periodontal disease and cavities, difficulty chewing, excessively worn teeth, and strain on the jaw joint can be eventually expected.

As an individual, your experience with tooth loss will be unique, but you can trust our implant dentists to anticipate the potential consequences and provide you with the appropriate solutions. To learn more about your dental implant options, call ORA® Oral Surgery & Implant Studio in Chicago, Illinois at 312-328-9000 for your consultation.
