Can all of my wisdom teeth be extracted at the same time?

wisdom teeth ChicagoWhen the wisdom teeth are impacted, patients typically will choose to have them surgically extracted. If extraction of all four wisdom teeth is recommended, patients often will have them all removed during the same procedure to avoid subsequent surgeries and additional costs.

Wisdom teeth removal becomes necessary when there is not enough room in the jaw for those large third molars to erupt completely in the correct positions. The wisdom teeth become impacted in a significant number of patients because our jaws have evolved to become smaller and more narrow over time.

When impacted wisdom teeth remain in place, they can create a risk for a number of negative oral health outcomes, including infection, abscesses, decay and damage to neighboring teeth, among others. Therefore, many patients are wise to choose to have their wisdom teeth removed to prevent issues from developing, even before they become symptomatic.

During the treatment planning process, the oral surgeon will examine your jaw and take advanced 3D x-rays to determine how many wisdom teeth are impacted and if they should be removed. The surgeon will discuss your treatment options with you and advise you if it is best for all of the teeth to be removed during the same procedure. If there are any specific concerns that may contraindicate removal of all four wisdom teeth, the surgeon will inform you of these and advise you of a more appropriate treatment plan.

Many patients have some qualms about the prospect of any oral surgery, so it’s important to discuss these in advance with your surgeon so that you are making an informed decision as to whether to proceed with the intervention. You should also be sure that you understand all of your surgeon’s pre-operative and post-operative instructions so that you can minimize the risk of complications.

Most patients will be able to have all four of their wisdom teeth removed at the same time if they choose to do so. Discuss your preferences with your oral surgeon, and feel free to ask any questions that you may have about the treatment. We want to be sure that you are well-informed and comfortable throughout the process!
