Part 3: Wisdom Teeth Removal Can Be Fun – Ellen Degeneres Says So!

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

This is the third of a three part series on real life examples of how having your wisdom teeth extracted can actually be a fun experience and sometimes a hilarious one.  The Ellen Show has really taken a liking to the whole process, especially the initial recovery period, where some rather amusing things can happen.  Some of the medications that a patient receives are sedatives and relaxants that can make you a bit forgetful, euphoric, and un-inhibited.  The medications are very well tolerated and metabolized quickly and everyone’s experience is unique, but in general, patients awaken surprised that the procedure is finished and in a pleasant, mellow, and super happy state.

The whole process at ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio in Chicago begins with a trip to to oral surgery suite on the day of your wisdom tooth removal procedure.  You will have one  of the very comfortable, peaceful, sterile operating rooms reserved for your oral surgery procedure.  Patients have the choice to listen to whatever music that they like, and are able to pick from any genre and from over 40,000 songs (and always growing) residing on an Apple i-Pod that has an in-wall docking station.  A patient’s personal music selection is played overhead through a premium sound system and then the procedure commences with some nitrous oxide (laughing gas) which is the first step in the dental sedation process.  Patients awaken in a pleasant and euphoric mood, with their favorite musical artist still playing and often not believing that their wisdom teeth removal procedure is complete.  Some patients are super euphoric and very talkative, and in this case here, where a young girl was featured on the Ellen Show, she actually thought Ellen Degeneres was present filming her!

One of Select Few To Utilize i-CAT 3D Cone Beam CT Scanner

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

ORA® Oral Surgery & Implant Studio, a Chicago Loop oral surgery practice specializing in dental implants, All-on-4, wisdom teeth removal, and a wide range of jaw and oral surgery procedures, is pleased to announce that it is one of only a select few dental facilities within Chicago to have an i-CAT 3D Cone Beam CT Scanner within its practice.

Online PR News – 19-December-2011 –Chicago, IL – ORA® Oral Surgery & Implant Studio, a Chicago Loop oral surgery practice specializing in dental implants, All-on-4, wisdom teeth removal, and a wide range of jaw and oral surgery procedures, is pleased to announce that it is one of only a select few dental facilities within Chicago to have an i-CAT 3D Cone Beam CT Scannerwithin its practice. This advanced technology offers complete views of all oral structures, allowing Dr. Steven Koos, a Chicago oral surgeon and owner of ORA®, as well as his staff, to dramatically enhance the level of care offered to patients.

The i-CAT 3D Cone Beam CT Scanner provides dental professionals with an immediate three dimensional image of a patient’s critical anatomy without the typical distortion and magnification seen with traditional plan film images. This gives dentists, oral surgeons and other dental professionals the opportunity to more thoroughly analyze a patient’s tooth orientation, bone structure, wisdom teeth, TMJ joint spaces, periodontal conditions, root fractures and root canals, and maxillary sinuses and airways. It eliminates the guesswork that is present when clinicians use older plain film technology and makes it easier to evaluate deformities and pathologies, and the 3D mapping tools are crucial for implant dentistry. In addition to the enhanced images provided by the i-CAT CT scanner, the technology and equipment increases patient comfort by providing open environment seating and a quicker scan time (as little as nine seconds!). It also produces dramatically lower radiation compared to traditional CT scans.

“We have invested in the i-CAT 3D Cone Beam CT Scanner for our practice for a number of reasons,” explains Chicago implant dentist and oral surgeon, Dr. Koos. “For one, it allows us to more thoroughly analyze a patient’s anatomy to determine the best course of treatment. The technology also affords us the opportunity to visually show a patient what we see and more easily explain treatment. This increases confidence levels in patients and makes them feel more comfortable with their treatment. Finally, as a Chicago oral surgery practice focused on environmental responsibility that spans all aspects of how we operate our practice, the fact that the i-CAT scanner is digital, forgoing toxic x-ray chemicals and film manufacturing and emits dramatically lower radiation compared to other CT scanners was of supreme importance to us.”

In fact, ORA® Oral Surgery & Implant Studio has been recognized within Chicago and nationwide for its commitment to environmental responsibility. The practice has received numerous awards due to its eco-friendly dentistry practices and is touted as a leader among the dental and oral surgery community for its green initiatives. From how the Chicago Loop oral surgery office is decorated to the types of equipment and procedures utilized in the day-to-day operation of the practice, Dr. Koos and his staff are focused on making the most environmentally friendly choices for their patients, for themselves and for the environment as a whole. “The i-CAT scanner fits into our eco-friendly model of dentistry reducing our carbon footprint, while offering numerous additional benefits for us as practitioners and for our patients,” says Dr. Koos. “In my book, that’s a win-win situation for all.”

###

ORA® Oral Surgery & Implant Studio is an oral surgery practice in the Chicago Loop neighborhood owned by Dr. Steven Koos. Dr. Koos and his entire staff are committed to operating an environmentally friendly practice that specializes in all aspects of oral surgery and implant dentistry. The i-CAT 3D scanner is just one element of ORA® ‘s dedication to offering the highest level of patient care and they are one of the few dental practices throughout Chicago to utilize this state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. Part1: Wisdom Teeth Removal Can Be Fun – Ellen Degeneres Says So!

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

This is the first of a three part series on real life examples of how having your wisdom teeth extracted can actually be a fun experience. Wisdom teeth removal can sometimes be a daunting experience for some, especially if you are the type of person that dislikes any trip to the dentist, let alone a dental surgery visit to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. But rest assured, that with comfortable, safe sedation and a skillfully trained surgical team like at ORA, the procedure will be quite easy to endure.  In fact, many patients are amazed that they feel nothing, remember nothing and when they wake up, some even refuse to believe that the extraction of their impacted wisdom teeth is over.

Many amusing videos have been filmed by family members and friends of their loved ones during the oral surgery experience and recovery period.  Many of these have been posted on Youtube.  The Ellen Show has taken a liking to the whole “enjoyable wisdom tooth experience” and the initial post anesthesia hilarity, so much so, that she has even featured several segments dedicated to this topic.  Ellen has even invited these oral surgery patients onto her show for an interview to share their funny experiences with all of America.

The team at ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio in Chicago wanted to share this segment with you to demonstrate what “Unicorns and the Land of Blueberries” have in common with getting your impacted wisdom teeth taken out!

For a person who has anxiety issues, going to the dentist when you know you have to have teeth pulled is extremely hard. I had been told by Dana the hygenistwho works at Ora that I had a couple of lose wisdom teeth, but being the procrastinator that I am, my dentist Dr. Kralj told me when I was ready to have them pulled just to let him know. I had my wisdom teeth removed just two weeks ago and I really do not know why I was scared. From the moment I met Dr. Koos and he explained everything to me….I realized I was in good hands. On the day of the proceedure his assistant (who was extremely nice) took me back to one of his surgery rooms. He explained he was going to put this little “bozo nose” on me which had laughing gas in it. Next thing he did was to put an IV in my hand which I never felt going in … In 1/2 hour Dr. Koos was done and waking me up. Once I was awake he explained everything I had to do. Keep a cold compress on the swelling sites and take Ibuprofin. If the pain became too bad he also sent me home with a prescription for pain medication. Dr. Koos called later that night to find out how I was doing..or to see if I had any questions. I honestly slept most of the day…and I awoke the next day to find out I had no swelling and not a lot of pain. I just couldn’t eat solid foods for awhile.
I can’t thank him enough for taking the time to walk me through the proceedure and care enough to call to find out how I was.
If I need more oral surgery…..I will definately see Dr. Koos and recommend him to anyone who needs his help.
I also recommend anyone who needs to see a regular dentist go to see Dr. Kralj he is extremely nice and does not push you into having things done you just can’t afford.
I can’t say enough about the office staff they are wonderful.

I have been to ORA twice, once to have my wisdom teeth extracted and yesterday to have a molar extracted. Both procedures were done by Dr Koos. He is excellent! The first time I was put to sleep but the last time I was awake. I was a little worried about the last one but Dr. Koos explained what he was doing the entire time so it wasn’t bad at all! With both extractions I had minimal pain and no swelling. He and his staff are very good with explaining the aftercare and he calls to make sure you aren’t having any issues. I highly recommend Dr Koos.

Hands down the only place you should go to get surgery work done!
TIMELINE
Birth to August 2nd 2011: wisdom teeth developed and sorta partially poked through my gums a little bit and bothered me here and there over the last few years.

August 3rd 2011 a.m.: I woke up with pain and swelling on my lower right side after feeling a little tender the night before, just a little freaked out!  Did a frantic online search for wisdom teeth Chicago and oral surgeon Chicago to come across ORA and Dr. Koos..was it divine intervention?  I called the office and Leddie must have heard the desperation in my voice and talked to the doctor and they were able to squeeze me in for a consult that same day!  I was desperate to get in because I was waiting for Lollapalooza for months now and there was no way that I wanted to miss it, but Murphy’s Law was trying to get in the way.

August 3rd 2011 p.m. : My office visit was awesome, Susie was able to check into my insurance information even before I arrived and Dr. Koos was really so sympathetic and caring.  He put me at ease too because I was more than nervous.  When I told him that I desperately did not want to miss Lollapalooza over the weekend, especially Eminem on Saturday night, he chuckled and said that he “couldn’t promise anything but I will do my best to make that happen for you.” He gave me some antibiotics and Vicodin and they squeezed me into the schedule on Friday again to have the surgery done.

August 5th 2011 a.m.: My swelling has come down with the antibiotics and I am quite nervous and sad that I will probably be missing out on Lollapalooza.  I show up for surgery with a friend and they take me back into this really cool operating room with a peaceful sky on the ceiling.  Dr. Koos, in a very cool way, plays Muse from his iPod before I go under and says “in the spirit of Lolllapalooza is Muse good with you or would you like to hear Girl Talk or Coldplay?”  Muse was perfect for me and with the gas – whooaaa!  I woke up after what seemed like only a minute and completely de-stressed when they told me that I was done and everything went very well..

August 5th 2011 p.m.: I couldn’t believe how good I felt after having 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed earlier that day, but what was driving me more to recover was going to see A Perfect Circle and Muse.  Against his advice I went to Lollapalooza that night.  I was a little embarrassed when he called to check in on me and I could barely hear anything because of the crowd and music when I was supposed to be at home icing!  He told me that I better promise to ice all day the next day before Eminem and not to overdo it tonight.

August 6th 2011 p.m.:  After a day of chilling and icing and feeling pretty good I ecstatically get to go to Eminem and the weather is great and the set was amazing, and I have Dr. Koos to thank for making it all possible!

The End

I first went to ora with a terrible tooth ache and ora was very accomidating to my schedule and the urgancy of my situation. I met with dr. mark and then with the surgeon steve. I have never felt so comfortable with a dentist office and the entire staff was amazing. I can actually say that I want to get back to keep up on my dental work. Which has never been the case in my entire life.
I highly recommend ora for any of your dental needs.
It feels great to have a dentist you are comfortable and confident in.
Oh, and the office is really clean!
AND the dentist even called me later in the evening to see how I was recovering.
Definitely looking forward to heading back in there with trust in the dentist.

Thanks Ora!

I just had all my wisdom teeth pulled a few days ago, and this place was perfect for me.  First, you walk in and it looks like to walking into a spa. :) Very modern but very cozy. Everyone that works there seemed very nice and easy to talk to.

I had Dr. Steven Koos performed the surgery on me. I made him fully aware that I didn’t really like going to the dentist, but he reassured me that he would take good care of me and to make sure I wouldn’t feel a thing. Which he was right. I was in and out and still feel pretty good, but swollen and it’s just been 2 days.

I would recommend this place to any of my friends!

My dentist from Manus Dental referred me to Dr. Koos for getting my impacted wisdom teeth out and I have to say that even though it was not something that I looked forward to in the least, his bedside manner and attention are hard to find these days and his office and facilities are truly amazing. Too bad he is an oral surgeon only – I would go to him for all my healthcare!

After reading the reviews, I decided this is the place to say good bye to all 4 of my wisdom teeth. After the visit I can say, it was a VERY pleasant experience.

When scheduling my appointment, they were able to see me asap. During my visit, i was put to sleep while he extracted all 4 of my wisdom teeth. I woke up and felt no pain. I was sent home with a cleaning kit, a cold pack, and a prescription for pain meds.  The doctor also called later that evening to make sure i was feeling okay.

My dental insurance was blue cross/blue shield. After my insurance picked up some of the tab, the bill was a little costly, but they were able to set up payment arrangements.

After hearing the horror stories of getting your wisdom teeth pulled, I can say my experience was the best. If I didn’t move to California, I would still be coming to ORA.
