Knowledge Builder – eco-friendly dentistry®

‘Eco-Friendly’ and ‘Green’ are terms that have recently been widely used and can indicate several things, such as renewability, sustainability, energy efficiency, non-toxicity, being minimally invasive, and a reduction in carbon footprint. These concepts have taken root within many diverse industries. More specifically, Green Healthcare has been an established initiative and goal for many years now within the medical community and is evolving into mainstream implementation. This new model of healthcare is based on the understanding that human and environmental health are inextricably linked. Green and Eco-Friendly Healthcare takes us beyond the Hippocratic oath, calling upon all health professionals to also “do no harm to the environment” and by focusing more on prevention, precaution, education, and wellness, we can significantly contribute to improving the health of our patients, community, and the environment. The broad concept of Green Healthcare encompasses green building and design of offices, as well as sustainable and eco-friendly practices employed during patient care. So, for starters we must ask several essential questions:

Why focus on the healthcare sector?

  • Almost every healthcare setting, including private practice medical and dental offices, utilize PBT (persistent bio-accumulative toxins), such as mercury, lead, PVC, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers), HBCDs (hexabromocyclododecanes), and other harmful chemicals and elements, which with exposure can adversely affect the health of team members, patients and the environment.
  • Healthcare facilities and offices spend over $8.5 billion dollars on energy annually to meet patient needs.
  • Within the healthcare industry actual documented toxic medical waste generation from the WHO (World Health Organization) for North America alone is approximately 6lbs/person/year, which is an astounding 1,108,000 tons per year and exponentially growing.
  • The U.S. ranks the health care sector as the fourth largest source of mercury air emissions.
  • The dental industry alone is responsible for approximately 3.7 tons of mercury-containing waste, 680 million plastic and paper chair barriers, light handle covers, and patient bibs, and 1.7 billion instrument sterilization pouches yearly.
  • The elimination of single-use plastic suction and irrigation tips from a single dental practice can divert approximately 20,400 pieces of plastic from entering the waste stream per year.

Given these facts, it becomes an inherent duty and obligation for the entire dental industry to follow suit as integral members of the healthcare community. This is where eco-friendly dentistry® has emerged. The term eco-friendly dentistry® has been coined and trademarked by the founder of ORA® Oral Surgery & Implant Studio®, the nation’s first green ORA® Oral surgery facility, Steven Koos D.D.S., M.D.

How is eco-friendly dentistry® defined?

  • eco-friendly dentistry® is a newly evolving practice of dentistry, which encompasses a simultaneous devotion to sustainability, prevention, precaution, and a minimally invasive patient-centric, as well as global-centric, treatment philosophy.

The implementation of eco-friendly practices in the dental office involves an extensive list of protocols, procedures, materials, state-of-the-art equipment and methods, but does not have to be a daunting endeavor and can be accomplished with small incremental steps. The best place to start the process is through the EDA™ (Eco-Dentistry Association) at www.ecodentistry.org. The EDA has established the authoritative benchmarks for green certification in the dental industry. Going green can also mean saving green - nearly every eco-friendly innovation is also friendly to the bottom line.

Patient Review ? Gregory, J., Chicago, IL. This was the best dental experience of my life!!! After putting off getting my wisdom teeth pulled for over a year, out of fear of oral surgeons and the horror stories I was told, I took the plunge and went to Dr. Koos and his team! First off, the office is INCREDIBLE and feels like [...]
Patient Review From Jada Z., Chicago, Illinois. I would give this place 10 stars if I could. I had three of my wisdom teeth removed yesterday (my fourth one never formed). That was the first time I was under the general anesthesia so I was a little nervous. The nurse (I am really bad with remembering names and I couldn’t find her [...]
Review of Oral Surgeon ? Samantha G., Chicago, IL. After a ridiculously traumatic experience getting my bottom 2 wisdom teeth out at my regular dentist (all I need to tell you is 4 hours, no anesthesia/gas, and ‘complicated’ teeth that he wasn’t prepared for), I waited 4 years to get the other two out. Oops. I’m also terrified of needles despite being covered in [...]
Patient Review ? Mary Margaret S., Chicago, IL. A co-worker of mine put it best, in regards to oral surgery: no matter how far we progress as a society, with our technology, dentistry is still so primal, so caveman. Breaking bones and cracking teeth. It’s the only thing that hasn’t evolved. Now, while I was out for the cavemen practices, the rest of [...]
Review From Elanor, Chicago, IL. I can’t say enough about Dr.Koos and everyone at ORA Oral Surgery and Implant Studio. I’ve been a patient of Dr. Koos’ for the past two years having gone through a tooth extraction and bone graft which was then followed up with an dental implant and crown. Throughout my treatment, Dr. Koos and his staff [...]
Review From Nicole H., Chicago, IL. Dr. Koos is amazing! I just had all of my wisdom teeth extracted. Dr. Koos’ bedside manner turned what I was expecting to be a very scary and painful experience into a calming & relatively low-pain experience. He has a very calming nature that just made me feel comfortable and confident that the surgery would [...]
Review From Arun, Chicago, IL. I had all 4 wisdom teeth takenout by Dr Koos. It was a quick procedure (actually with the anesthesia seemed instantaneous to me), and he gave us clear instructions when we left. As others reviews mentioned,he also called back later that day to check in and answer questions. Although I did have some issues during [...]
Review From Lauren C., Chicago, Illinois. My husband went here for an implant a couple of months ago. They were incredibly nice and professional. The actual procedure took less than 30 minutes and my husband had very little pain afterwards. I am so glad we went here!! Our normal dentist office (Dental Salon) brought in an oral surgeon and he told [...]
Review From Whitney, D. Chicago, IL. DR. STEVE IS TALL AND VERY VERY SEXY. Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, on to the actual review of the services I received. I went here for a consultation recently and didn’t have to sit for long, maybe 10 minutes if that. I went over to the 360 X-ray machine and [...]
Review From Taylor, G Chicago, Illinois. The dentists there are GREAT. Very thorough and explained everything very well. I received a Saturday evening phone call from dentist after surgery to check up on me. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the dentists. They would have gotten 5 stars if it wasn’t for the front desk. I went in for [...]
