Very Important Distinctions Within The Field Of Dentistry With Respect To Sedation

ABC’s Nightline has just done a piece on the tragic consequences of inadequate training and having a regular dentist perform sedation.  In sharp contrast to this, the doctors at ORA Oral Surgery & Implant Studio in Chicago wanted to clarify the very important distinction between a regular dentist and an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.   As the surgical specialists of the dental profession, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are extensively trained in all aspects of anesthesia administration.

During their 6 year intensive residencies, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons are the only dental specialists with the unique integration, both didactically as well as clinically, of comprehensive medical anesthesia training and practical experience in all forms of sedation: Oral Sedation, I.V.Sedation (Conscious Sedation, Moderate Sedation) , and General Anesthesia (Deep Sedation).

The ability to provide patients with safe and effective anesthesia has distinguished the specialty since its inception. Today’s technology makes it possible to perform both simple and complex procedures in an office setting while maintaining maximum patient comfort and safety.

At ORA® Surgery and Implant Studio of Chicago Dr. Steven Koos DDS, MD, who is both a physician and surgeon, offers a full range of comfort levels with all office-based procedures for adults as well as children. At your consultation Dr. Koos will discuss the best anesthesia options for you depending on the complexity of your procedure and level of comfort required. Utilizing gentle medications that are well tolerated and quickly metabolized, allows for safe and comfortable procedures, with a quick and smooth recovery.

During your procedure, one or more of the following may be used to eliminate discomfort and anxiety: pre-appointment sedative medication, local anesthesia, nitrous oxide (laughing gas),intravenous light sedation, and general anesthesia. Commonly, patients describe their feelings during procedures as comfortable and surprisingly pleasant.
